Immunotherapy- A Non-Surgical Respite for Cancer Patients

There are many types of cancer treatment depending upon the type of cancer and at how advanced level it is.

While some cancer has only one type of treatment, most people have to undergo a combination of treatment including surgery with chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy. Also, available are treatments like:-

1)     Immunotherapy
2)     Targeted therapy
3)     Stem cell transplant
4)     Hormone therapy.

Let's have a peek into these treatments to know more about them:-

1) Surgery
As a treatment for cancer, surgery is a process in which a surgeon removes cancer tumors from the body. Surgery could be open surgery or minimally invasive surgery.
In the open surgery, a large cut is made by the surgeon to remove the tumor, a few health issues and maybe some nearby lymph nodes.
While in the invasive surgery the surgeon makes few small cuts. It takes less time to recover in this kind of surgery, then open surgery.

2) Radiation therapy
In this kind of cancer treatment, high doses of radiations are made used to kill cancer cells and shrink tumors. These radiations slow the growth or kill cancer cells damaging their DNA. Once the DNA is broken down, cells are removed by the body.

3) Chemotherapy
This is a type of cancer treatment in which drugs are used to kill cancer cells. These drugs slow down or stop the growth of cancer cells. Adjuvant chemotherapy is continued on the patient to destroy cancer cells that remain after treatment with surgery or radiation therapy.
Chemotherapy helps other treatment methodologies to work better killing cancer cells that have returned or spread to the other part of the body.

4) Hormone therapy
This therapy slows down or stops the growth of cancer cell that uses hormones to grow. This is also known as endocrine therapy. Hormone therapy lessens the chances of cancer to return or stop or slows its process.
Hormone therapy is used to prevent or reduce symptoms in men with prostate cancer in whom surgery or radiation therapy cannot be carried out.

5) Stem cell transplant
This is the procedure that restores blood-forming stem cells in cancer patients who have destroyed theirs due to high doses of chemotherapy or radiation therapy.

In this treatment, a patient's immune system helps to fight cancer. It may be made up of white blood cells, organs, and tissues of the lymph system. Immunotherapy is a biological therapy that uses substances from other living organisms to treat cancer.

Intravenous (IV) is the immunotherapy going directly into the vein. While in the oral immunotherapy, pills or capsules are swallowed by the patient.

In the topical immunotherapy, the cream is rubbed on to the skin for the treatment of very early stages of skin cancer.

Intravesical immunotherapy goes directly into the bladder.
