Stem Cells Treatments for Liver Cirrhosis
Chronic liver failure is known to
be the fifth biggest killer in developed countries. Although, liver is known to
be the organ with enhanced power of regeneration, a significant damage to it
may lead to its permanent loss of ability; which can lead to the life
threatening problem. Currently, liver transplant is the only full proof
treatment; which could alter the condition. Although, in today’s scenario due
to increased disease specific socioeconomic burden, even the demand of organs
is so high that patients have to wait for their entire life in search of
suitable organs.
Liver has been offered a very
much importance in performing different tasks such as removing blood toxins,
digesting the food, fighting against the infection and is known to be the
biggest reservoir of blood in the body. These are some of the specific reasons,
why liver cirrhosis problems
should be considered as a major health issue and not just a disease. There are
over 100 different reasons, which can risk our liver; such as alcohol
consumption, obesity, genetically problems, autoimmune disorders, etc.
Liver, like other important
functional organs of the body; is made up of many different cells, from which
hepatocytes are the leading players. On an average, each hepatocyte comes up
with the life expectancy of 300 days. These liver cells can make generous
copies of themselves to make up the routine damage associated with the
condition. However, in case of severely progressive liver injury, the damage is
so high that there is an increased demand for external supply of stem cells,
which can intuitively regenerate cells and restore the function back.
Research has advanced and many
facets of stem cells are explored to gain better understanding of how, new stem
cells based therapies could work. It has been observed that once pushed inside
the body after isolation and induced laboratory enrichment, these cells can
migrate at the site of injury due to their strong signalling sense. They can
regulate body’s immune system to subside the initial signs of inflammation and
can initiate regeneration of lost or weakened cells to boost the overall
working capacity of the organ.
As such stem cells treatments still
need to undergo lot of development but for those who are just on the verge of
losing it due to their liver problems can try this option; which can definitely
stop the progressive damage if not altered the condition.
