Treatment of Diabetes with Stem Cells in India
Diabetes is an autoimmune metabolic disorder, generally characterized by
high blood sugar level in the blood or lack of insulin to metabolize sugar. It
is certainly not a deadly disease but is typically a chronic disease with
reduced life expectancy due to other complications such as diabetic foot, organ
damage, cardiovascular complications, blindness, etc.
The disease is
rightly called as silent killer, as the condition goes asymptomatic for years. Although,
certain life style changes have been observed such as increased thirst,
frequent urination and/ or improved appetites. What causes diabetes is a matter
of debate; as various studies have put forth different risk factors. Some of
the preliminary causative factors for the disease can be obesity, poor diet and
lack of activity as well as genetic makeup of the individual. Apart from the
factors mentioned above, others are old age, high blood pressure, ethnicity,
etc. It is very important to know, what is happening inside your body; if you
are diabetic.
To be
functionally active, every human being needs energy, which is obtained through
the food we eat. This food is metabolized in the liver by releasing sugar
molecules in the blood. The sugar molecules are then transported to each and
every cell, where they get converted into ATP molecules; which are known to be
mainly responsible for generation of energy. Insulin is the hormone, which is
being produced by the beta cells of the pancreas and is mainly responsible for
this transportation. However, in case of conditions such as diabetes; either
insulin is not produced by the body or cannot be utilized for sugar
transportation, leading to the rise in blood sugar level. Increased blood sugar
level, ignored for longer period of time; can have serious health issues such
as blurred vision, fatigue, slow healing rate, infections, diabetic neuropathy,
optic neuropathy, cardiovascular complications, kidney failure, etc. Hence, it
is very important to manage the symptoms with diabetes at the early stage.
To date, the
blood sugar level can be controlled with the help of diet, exercise, certain
medications, hormonal supplements but there is no permanent cure available
conventionally for the said issue. However, with the busy life schedule, more
and more people are interested to find out a permanent solution to this issue.
With the advancement in technology, stem cells therapy can now be
practically opted to treat various deadly diseases including diabetes treatment. Clinical studies have reported that with
the application of stem cells, the insulin dependency of the diabetic patients
can be significantly reduced.
Stem cells are the unique
cells of human body; which can be differentiated into any tissue specific cells
with the proper signalling of the body’s defence mechanism. This unique
property of stem cells is the basic of regenerative medicine. It has been
proven that the diseases are progressed due to cellular loss of the organs
whereas stem cells can stop the progression of the diseases with the help of
regeneration of lost cells. Many a times, it has been formulated that the
reserved quota of stem cells are already present in our own body, which can be
utilized or redirected at the site of injury to make over the damage. Bone
marrow & adipose tissue are the abundant sources that are widely used for
stem cells isolation.
With the
technological advancements, stem cells
can be isolated from the mentioned sources outside the human body, processed in
the laboratory for further enrichment and infused back at the site of injury.
Thus, it is
certainly a unique technology and a definitive alternative for conventional
treatments.
